The Blue Fog Forests of Santa Cruz

One of the reasons I moved to California in 2021 was to be surrounded by these incredible, lush, magical forests wrapped in coastal fog. They did not disappoint. Sometimes these forests scare me, especially knowing that wild animals like mountain lions live here, but I'm always left awestruck and enamored.

This project is a mix of digital and film on Portra 800, hence the grain. I love how the film captured the green mosses and blue fog so vividly, which I think is created by the Rayleigh Scattering effect (same as how the sky looks blue to us on a clear day).

These images were captured in the redwood and oak forests surrounding Santa Cruz, California. Amongst the moss and towering trees, you can spot a wild coyote, my dog, and I. :)
